We’re averaging around 400 visitors daily and residents are thoroughly enjoying the City’s first-ever splash pad on these hot summer days! With three successful projects officially under our belts, we’re excited to see what’s still to come.   Academy-Gibson Athletic Fields: Construction is nearing completion and we anticipate the fields to reopen just in time for fall baseball and soccer! This month, crews installed the grass behind the third base dugouts, poured concrete along the backstop and dugout, and added the red padding to the backstop.   J.E. “Jim” Ramseur Park: Construction continues and the new park is beginning to really take shape. The pickleball area is currently being graded, the foundation for one of the playground areas is being prepped, and additional curb work is being installed throughout the park. An overlook boardwalk is nearly complete that will connect the trails within the park to the Clarke Creek Greenway. This new park, the City’s first on the west side of the city, is anticipated to be completed next summer.  David Phillips Park: Construction at the new David Phillips Park, behind the David Phillips Activity Center on Burrage Road, began just last month after Mayor Morris, members of Council, City leadership, and the Park’s namesake Mr. David Phillips, held a formal groundbreaking ceremony. While the rainy weather the past few weeks wasn’t ideal, crews have still been able to begin grading and clearing work. Construction for this project is anticipated to take 12 months. Academy-Gibson Skate Park, Pump Track, and Sculpture Garden: During last month’s Council meeting, the final design of the City’s first Skate Park, Pump Track, and Sculpture Garden was approved and this month the project officially went out to bid.  Construction on the much-anticipated amenities is scheduled to begin this fall. It’s exciting to see these projects come to life and be enjoyed by residents young and old!    This month we celebrated the completion of Caldwell Park on July 14 and kicked off construction at the new David Phillips Park on July 9!    J.E. “Jim” Ramseur Park: At Ramseur Park, crews are continuing to mass grade the construction site. Additional curbing was installed and a base layer of stone was put down in the main parking lot area. We’re still on track for this new park on the west side of the City to open in fall 2027.   Academy-Gibson Athletic Fields: The athletic fields are nearly complete! The interior of the new storage facility is being finished up and the new adult changing tables, courtesy of Willow’s Wish, are being installed in the restroom facility. Padding along the backstop of the baseball diamond was installed, putting the finishing touches on the fields. Just a few more things to check off the list and we’ll be ready to re-open this fall!   David Phillips Park: Construction officially kicked off this month at the new David Phillips park! Equipment and construction fencing was brought to the site and clearing and grading work is just beginning.   Academy-Gibson Skate Park, Pump Track, and Sculpture Garden: This much-anticipated project’s final design was approved by City council this month, which puts us one step closer to beginning construction later this fall!   Hartsell Park, Poplar Tent Trailhead Park, Wilson Street Park, W.W. Construction is close to wrapping up at Caldwell Park and the Academy-Gibson Athletic Fields, construction will begin at David Phillips Park this summer, and the final design for the Academy-Gibson Skate Park, Pump Track, and Sculpture Garden is nearing completion!   Marvin Caldwell Park: Crews at Marvin Caldwell Park worked on the stage and seating areas of the Robert Mathis Amphitheater, are nearly finished with the covered basketball courts, and are planning to get the splash pad and playground equipment installed in the next two weeks, weather permitting.  Pictured above: splash pad and restroom facility construction at Marvin Caldwell Park   Academy-Gibson Athletic Fields: Installation of the new artificial turf baseball and football fields are complete, along with the baseball field backstop and netting. Crews continued work on renovations to the existing buildings and construction is nearing completion on the new restroom and storage facility. Construction is set to begin later this summer.   Academy-Gibson Skate Park, Pump Track, and Sculpture Garden: We anticipate the final designs to be ready for the Academy-Gibson Skate Park, Pump Track, and Sculpture Garden to be completed in the next month so we can take them to City Council for approval later this summer. Once approved, we’ll begin making plans to break ground!   Hartsell Park, Poplar Tent Trailhead Park, and Wilson Street Park: All these projects are still in the design phase. The timelines for each project can be found on the “Bond Projects” page of our website.   W.W. Flowe Park and the Academy Recreation Center: Design for these projects has not started yet. They’re anticipated to begin in 2027, with construction coming once final design is complete. "Jim" Ramseur Park. The notice to proceed with construction was given to the contractor, J.D. Goodrum, and work will soon begin on the new park.
